Hand saws remain useful even in a shop full of power tools — for quick cuts where setup time exceeds cutting time, for cuts in tight spaces where a circular saw won't fit, and for quiet work where a power saw would be inappropriate. The main choice is between Western-style push saws (the traditional design) and Japanese pull saws (which cut on the pull stroke). Each has distinct advantages for specific applications.

Western saws (Stanley FatMax, IRWIN Universal, Shark Corp) cut on the push stroke using a stiffer blade that stays straight under forward pressure. They work well in green lumber and soft wood where the cut path is relatively open. Japanese pull saws (Suizan, Gyokucho) cut on the pull stroke using a thinner blade under tension — the pull stroke allows a thinner kerf, more precise control, and cleaner cuts in hardwood and finish carpentry. Pull saws produce less tearout on the surface visible to the operator (the opposite side in a Western saw). For most woodworkers doing dovetails, joinery, and fine trim work, a Japanese pull saw produces noticeably cleaner results.

Teeth Per Inch (TPI) and Applications

Lower TPI (5-8) cuts faster in soft and green wood but leaves a rough edge. Higher TPI (11-16) cuts slower but cleaner — appropriate for hardwood joinery and finish cuts. A general-purpose Western saw at 8 TPI handles construction lumber for most homeowners. Japanese rip-cut blades have fewer, larger teeth for ripping along the grain; cross-cut blades have fine, angled teeth for clean cuts across the grain. The Gyokucho Ryoba is a double-edged pull saw with rip teeth on one edge and cross-cut teeth on the other — the most versatile single hand saw available. For cutting metal conduit, the Stanley FatMax accepts specialized metal-cutting blades.

Blade Length and Rigidity

Longer blades (20-26 inches) allow longer strokes that cut faster with less effort. Shorter blades (10-14 inches) fit tighter spaces. Blade stiffness determines tracking accuracy — a floppy blade wanders in the cut. Western saws use a thicker, stiffer blade. Japanese saws use a thin blade that stiffens under tension on the pull stroke. Hardpoint teeth (Western saws) cannot be resharpened but last 2-3x longer than regular teeth — replace the blade when dull rather than sharpening. Traditional Western saws with induction-hardened teeth are worth the cost because they outperform sharpenable saws until they finally dull.
