How to choose a Car Scanner - Differences in Automotive Diagnostic Too

This is the single most common OBD2 scanner complaint online: most cheap Bluetooth OBD2 adapters only work with Android, not iOS.

Why: Cheap adapters use Bluetooth Classic (the standard for wireless headphones, car audio). Apple's iOS does NOT allow apps to use Bluetooth Classic for data transfer — only Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) and MFi-certified hardware.

Clearing the check engine light resets the fault code and turns off the light. It also resets the "readiness monitors" — the tests the car runs to verify all systems are operating correctly.

If the underlying problem is still present: the light will come back on within 1–3 drive cycles. If you cleared the light to pass an emissions test, the monitors won't be ready yet — most states require monitors to be complete before passing. Drive the car normally for 50–100 miles after clearing codes before scheduling an emissions test.

An OBD2 scanner is valuable before buying a used car:

1. Ask to plug in your scanner before the purchase 2. Check for current fault codes — a seller who says "just passed inspection" but has active codes is hiding something 3. Will an OBD2 scanner drain my car battery? Minimally — a plugged-in adapter draws about 0.1–0.5 mA (milliamps) in standby. This is negligible for normal use. However, some Bluetooth adapters (especially cheap ones) can draw more than rated. If you're concerned, unplug the adapter when not in use. Standalone scanners plug in for use and unplug immediately after. Can I damage my car by using an OBD2 scanner? No — OBD2 scanners are read-only (plus code clearing). They cannot reprogram the ECU, change vehicle settings, or cause any damage. The port is standardized precisely so that any compliant device can connect safely. What does "I/M Readiness" mean?
